London mayor says Britain should refuse to ‘roll out the red carpet’ for Trump

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says the British government should refuse to “roll out the red carpet” for President Trump and cancel any future state visits.

“I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” Khan told Britain’s Channel 4 News.

Khan said despite his country’s close ties with America, it shouldn’t stop his government from standing firm when it disagrees with Trump.

“When you have a special relationship, it is no different from when you have got a close mate,” Khan added. “You stand with them in times of adversity, but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”

Trump earlier on Monday renewed his attack against the London mayor, calling remarks that Trump took out of context “pathetic.”

A spokesperson for Khan said Sunday that he wouldn’t respond to Trump’s tweet, saying he had “more important things to do.”

This is not the first time that Khan has said that Trump should be denied a state visit. Following Trump’s signing his first executive order barring travel from predominantly Muslim countries, Khan said Trump should not be welcomed over his “cruel” immigration policies.
