Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wondered how people can continue to support President Trump during the coronavirus pandemic.
The California Democrat appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Monday via webcam to discuss how she’s coping with the pandemic as well as her thoughts on Trump’s COVID-19 response. During the interview, she said it appears that Trump is “in denial” about the spreading virus.
“If you’re not evidence-based, if you’re not science-based, you have the luxury of just saying whatever you feel like. And that luxury is one our country can no longer afford because it is, again, dangerous,” she said. “I can’t psych out the president and why he does certain things, but I just do wonder how others can stand with him while he says the things he does in a way they’re accepting as truth.”
Pelosi also called Trump’s desire to reopen the economy soon “really scary,” saying it appears to be based on “who knows what.”
“I felt very responsible to speak out more clearly,” she said. “Even though we know the public wants us to work together, we cannot aid and abet the danger that he is causing.”

Her appearance followed reports that she labeled the president’s coronavirus response “almost sinful” during a private conversation with fellow Democrats.
“The more misrepresentations he puts out there, the more it obscures the truth,” she said. “We have to insist upon the truth — what they’re saying is not knowledge, is not facts, is not real.”
