Mark Warner: ‘Tone and tenor’ from Trump allies about Robert Mueller ‘should send a chill’ through everyone

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee said the “tone and tenor” coming from the Trump administration and its allies about special counsel Robert Mueller “should send a chill” through everyone.

“I’m not suggesting anything other than the fact that the tone and tenor of the comments coming out of the president’s allies both elected and otherwise should send a chill through all of us,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said at an Axios event in Washington early Thursday.

When asked about who is coordinating the efforts to undermine Mueller, Warner said: “I think that is a fair question, I don’t know who,” later adding, “I feel it is absolutely critical that the full truth come out.”

Warner gave a fiery speech on the Senate floor Wednesday cautioning against the removal of Mueller. Republicans have made calls to remove Mueller over accusations of political bias, and some from Trump’s orbit have called the special counsel a witch hunt.

“As Mueller gets close, the coordinating drum beat is increasing,” Warner said, adding of calls for Trump to fire the special counsel: “I hope this will never be a moment we have to act upon.”

Warner also called his committee’s investigation “the most important thing I’ll work on in my public life,” and said the panel is still continuing to obtain more documents, and has a number of witnesses scheduled for January.

Warner didn’t rule out bringing back Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr. to again interview before the committee.

“I don’t know how we can reach conclusions” if senators can’t question some of the principals themselves, Warner said.
