With Friends Like These

You’ve got to hand it to Alejandro Cao de Benos. While most Western apologists for North Korea obscure their sympathies with platitudes about wanting to “promote dialogue” or foster “cultural exchange,” de Benos, a Barcelona native, is out of the closet as a pro-regime activist. In 2000, he founded the Korea Friendship Foundation, which promotes the Kim dynasty worldwide, and de Benos is also said to travel to Pyongyang about twice a month.

He may have to skip this month’s journey however, because de Benos was arrested earlier this week for purchasing illegal weapons. The Korea Times reports:

Spanish police found four modified guns and 2,000 cartridges at his home and arrested him for allegedly dealing weapons near Barcelona, Tuesday. But there is no evidence that the alleged dealing was directly linked to the isolated country.

It’s almost as if the North Korean government consorts with some deeply unsavory characters.
