Former Virginia Del. Jeff Frederick, R-Prince William, who was ousted from his post as chairman of the state Republican party in 2009, is testing the waters for a potential comeback.
In an e-mail to supporters, Frederick said he is “actively considering” running against State Sen. Linda “Toddy” Puller in the 36th state Senate district, which includes part of Fairfax and Prince William counties under the new redistricting plan approved by the General Assembly.
“The fact is, as you might imagine, there are both pros and cons of such an undertaking of attempting to unseat an incumbent in a marginal (or just flat out tough gerrymandered) district; doing so in such a short timeframe; and reentering public life with three children under the age of 5,” he wrote. “But, for me it’s always been about serving and if God is lighting the path for me to contribute in this way, we’ll charge full speed ahead at the opportunity — and the challenge.”
Frederick has also formed a political action committee, Virginia’s Future PAC, and launched a new website.
State Republican leaders voted to oust Frederick in 2009 amid a host of charges, including that he mishandled party finances and did not coordinate with Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.
He also made controversial remarks in 2008 comparing then-presidential candidate Barack Obama to now-deceased al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
