Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, in his first full day on the job, imposed tough new restrictions in response to rising COVID-19 cases.
“This is about saving lives, nothing more and nothing less,” Scott said. “COVID doesn’t get tired, COVID doesn’t take days off, and COVID doesn’t care how you want to go back to normal.”
According to the Baltimore City Health Department, the seven-day average positivity rate in the city is 7.7%, an 85% increase from a month ago. The city is averaging about 245 cases a day, an increase of 98% over the last four weeks.
The restrictions will take effect at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Theaters and outdoor entertainment venues face some of the toughest restrictions, with all live performances being prohibited. Indoor recreational establishments such as bingo halls, bowling alleys, and social and fraternal clubs also will have to close.
Indoor and outdoor dining will be prohibited at restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Carryout and delivery services may continue.
Religious services, golf courses, shooting ranges, fitness centers, casinos, museums, and personal services such as barbershops and salons will be limited to 25% capacity.
