Majority of Iowans disapprove of Trump, believe country headed in wrong direction: Poll

President Trump won Iowa last year, but a majority of the state’s residents now disapprove of the job he is doing as president and believe the country is on the wrong track, according to a new poll.

The percentage of those who disapprove of Trump’s job as president has risen to 60 percent — up from 52 percent in July, according to a recent Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll. Meanwhile, Trump has hit a 35 percent approval rating among Iowans, dropping from 43 percent in July.

Additionally, 60 percent of those surveyed believe the country is on the wrong track and only 29 percent responded that the U.S. is moving in the right direction.

Trump is also unpopular among women in Iowa: 69 percent of women disapprove of the job he’s done. Likewise, 68 percent of those making under $50,000 a year and 67 percent of city-dwellers also disapprove

Majorities among two demographics in Iowa do approve of him, however. According to the poll, 78 percent of Republicans and 51 percent of evangelical Christians approve. Additionally, 62 percent of Republicans said the U.S. is moving in the right direction.

The poll also indicated that Iowans are increasingly politically apathetic following the 2016 election. Sixty-one percent of Iowans said they are turned off by politics more now than they were during the election.

However, Democrats appear to be more politically apathetic in this political climate than their Republican counterparts: 60 percent of Democrats say they are turned off more by politics now, in comparison to 52 percent of Republicans. Thirty-four percent of Democrats say they are more enthusiastic, whereas 40 percent of Republicans say they are more so now than before.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 3-6 by Selzer and Co. of Des Moines. A total of 802 Iowans participated and the poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
