A natural imagination

Snow still lingers from February?s storms, but inside the Artists? Gallery, flowers are in full bloom.

In her newest exhibit at the Columbia-based gallery, Danish-born artist Marian Gliese will display 25 of her floral oil paintings. Some are created from sketches of actual flowers, while others are painted purely from Gliese?s imagination.

“I think it will be an interesting show,” said Diane Dunn, publicist for the Artists? Gallery. “Marian views the world around her, especially the natural world, from a different perspective that gives her paintings intimacy.”

Gliese received her master?s degree in pharmaceutical botany in Copenhagen in 1991. Although her first experiences with art came in middle school, Gliese didn?t pursue art as a full-time career until 2002, when she moved to the U.S. with her husband Ulrik and their two children.

She attended classes at MICA and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C. In 2004, she and Ulrik, who is a professional photographer, opened Studio Gliese in Howard County. Since then, Gliese has exhibited in solo and group shows all over the Baltimore-Washington area.

“On the surface, my pictures show my fascination with nature and all its details. Everything about our world from the grandest view to the tiniest grain of sand is significant and exciting in its own right,” said Gliese in her artist?s statement. “There is always a fresh way to look at things that gives me surprising new experiences and enriches my view on life.”

Although her compositions display a variation of subjects from nature to abstract objects and figures, Gliese chose several of her botany paintings to exhibit. “I love flowers, and I like to work with colors,” she said. “That gives me the possibility to use a variety of different colors in my work.”
