Survey: Americans not holding their breath for housing recovery

As more cities across the country reach a double-dip in home prices, so too does peoples’ opinions on how the recession recovery is going. According to a recent national survey, 54 percent of Americans think the housing market won’t recover until 2014 or later.

The survey, commissioned by foreclosure tracking firms Trulia and ReatyTrac, was conducted last month and surveyed mroe than 2,000 people nationwide. Just 8 percent of respondents thought a housing recovery had either already occurred or would by the end of this year.

But who cares what people think? Here in D.C., economists largely agree that this area’s housing market is already in recovery, boasting an entire year in 2010 of continuously increasing home prices. Home prices gained more than 3 percent last year and predictions for 2011 are roughly the same.
