Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., announced Tuesday he will withdraw from his House re-election race and instead run for Minnesota attorney general.
“Today I am announcing my candidacy to be the People’s Lawyer, and to protect and defend all Minnesotans as your next Attorney General,” Ellison posted to Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Ellison said in a statement he will be running on a platform of confronting fraud and abuse when it comes to student loans and drug prices and said he would push for equal rights and criminal justice reform.
“No one — not even a President — is above the law,” Ellison said in his statement, in a nod to the recent debate on whether or not President Trump could pardon himself. “It has never been more important to have a leader as Attorney General who can stand up against threats to our neighbors’ health or freedoms.”
