KT McFarland to stay on as deputy national security adviser: Report

President Trump has reportedly asked his deputy national security adviser, KT McFarland, to remain in her position after the resignation of National Security Adviser Mike Flynn over his pre-inaugural contact with a Russian official.

McFarland accepted the request and is expected to stay on, Fox News reported on Tuesday.

Flynn left his position late Monday evening following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence on the nature of his December conversation with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. At the time, Flynn told senior administration officials he and the Russian ambassador did not discuss possible sanctions relief.

However, leaked transcripts of the conversation reportedly indicated that the issue of sanctions did indeed come up during the conversation late last year.

Pence had repeated Flynn’s denial as fact in televised interviews. Flynn submitted a letter of resignation to the president on Monday.

Earlier Tuesday, the New York Times had reported that McFarland was expected to follow Flynn out the door. Flynn reportedly brought McFarland into the administration.
