ICE: 45 foreign fugitives arrested

Forty-five foreign fugitives were arrested this week for their involvement in serious crimes that took place in their home countries, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement report.

The U.S. Marshals and ICE concentrated their efforts on individuals with Interpol red notices in an operation dubbed “Project Red II.”

A red notice provides information on a fugitive charged or convicted of a serious crime who then fled from their prosecution or sentencing.

The individuals who were arrested this week were wanted in 22 countries on various charges.

The charges included fraud, homicide, illegal gang activity, drug trafficking, rape, embezzlement, extortion and kidnapping.

This project was a joint effort between ICE and Interpol.

Washington Director of Interpol said of the operation, “The level of cooperation and partnership exemplified throughout Project Red II are a reflection of the achievements made possible when law enforcement agencies collaborate to ensure our nation and world are a safer place.”

Since Oct. 2009, 1,789 foreign fugitives have been removed from the U.S.
