Today’s story on the D.C. area’s richest communities outlines the top 20 wealthiest communities in our area, based on median household income data from the Census’ 2005-2009 American Community Survey.
But in putting together that list we also found out which communities have some of the lowest-ranking household income totals. Please note the list does not include every community because the survey doesn’t have information on some areas — but we did our best.
Not surprisingly, many of the lowest-ranked communities here are in Prince George’s County, home to cheaper housing and many first-generation Amercians. But the region’s disparity in income also shows up along the Interstate 95 corridor in Virginia. The section of Southeast D.C. across the Anacostia River tops the list as the lowest-earning area in the region.
