‘Mother of the Year’ arrested after punching umpire at children’s softball game

A Mississippi woman ambushed an umpire following a children’s softball game to punch her in the face last week.

The ten-year veteran umpire Kristi Moore took to Facebook Sunday to show her bruised face, the result of the assault in the city of Laurel. Kiara Nichelle Thomas, 32, has subsequently been charged with simple assault.

“I got punched coming off a field last night,” Moore captioned the photo. “There is no excuse for this.”

Previously, the coach had thrown Thomas out of the game for cursing, according to reports on the scene. Instead of going home, Thomas allegedly waited in the parking lot for Moore.

“Umpires are not perfect. We never will be,” Moore wrote.

Thomas was arrested after the attack, still wearing the same outfit she had on at the game. She wore a T-shirt with the phrase “Mother of the Year” stamped across it. Now, Thomas faces a fine of $422.25 and possible jail time, according to police. She has also been banned from all of Laurel’s recreational centers.

“It is just a misdemeanor, but we want people to feel safe,” Laurel Police Department Chief Tommy Cox told the Washington Examiner.

Thomas was ultimately released, but Cox claims to have heard reports that social media posts indicate a lack of regret for the assault. The Washington Examiner could not verify any posts from Thomas herself. She is due in court Wednesday.

The Mississippi Legislature attempted to classify assaults against sports umpires and referees as a felony under the law this year, but the bill has since died.
