Donald Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort brushed off reports that a Utah delegate received death threats from Trump supporters in a bathroom after a floor fight Monday over the party rules.
“I think I have a pretty good sense of what’s going on in this convention, but I haven’t gone in to the bathrooms yet,” Manafort told reporters Tuesday.
Republican delegate Kera Birkeland told The Salt Lake Tribune that the incident occurred after delegates from her own state, as well as a range of others, led an effort to change the convention rules, which could have placed Trump’s nomination in jeopardy.
“They said: ‘You should die. They should pull the protection from the Utah delegation. You should all die,'” Birkeland said.
The pro-Trump women called the Utah delegation “horrible” and “stupid” and left Birkeland in tears.
Trump supporters have threatened those leading efforts against the New York businessman in the past.
Stefani Stone Williams, also a Utah delegate, received an email from an official on Trump’s new York campaign telling her she should be “hung for treason.” Williams said the email only inspired her to fight harder to block Trump’s nomination.
