Kim Jong Un calls for suspension of all US-South Korean military exercises: Report

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is calling for the U.S. and South Korea to halt military drills, a request Trump “understands,” according to media reports.

North Korean state media claim that Kim is insisting that the U.S. suspend joint military drills with South Korea and that Trump has shown an interest in doing so as denuclearization discussions between the U.S. and Pyongyang continue, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports.

The report comes hot on the heels of Trump and Kim’s Tuesday meetings in Singapore, where the two heads of state signed a joint statement agreeing to pursue a “stable peace” on the peninsula.

“Today we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document,” Kim said at the signing ceremony. “The world will see a major change.”

At a press conference after Kim had left Singapore, Trump said North Korea agreed to give up its nuclear arms.

“We’re prepared to start a new history, and we’re ready to write a new chapter between our nations,” Trump said during a press conference after the summit. “There is no limit to what North Korea can achieve when it gives up its nuclear weapons and embraces commerce — an engagement with the rest of the world.”

Trump also claimed he was confident that the rogue regime would pursue complete denuclearization and that the process would be underway in the near future.

“It will happen. People thought this could never take place. It is now taking place. It is a very great day,” Trump said. “We signed a very, very comprehensive document and I believe he will live up to that document. In fact, when he lands, which is shortly, I think he will start that process right away.”
