The Democratic National Convention was criticized for featuring a video that included misinformation about President Trump’s stances on illegal immigration.
The convention featured a video of an 11-year-old girl, Estela Juarez, whose mother was deported by the Trump administration. The clip featured Juarez’s remarks about the pain her family felt after her mother was deported alongside clips of Trump discussing his policies.
“Every day that passes, you deport more moms and dads and take them away from kids like me,” Juarez said. “You separated thousands of children from their parents and you put them in cages.”
Members of Trump’s campaign noted that the Obama administration was in power when photographs were taken of children in cages inside a detention facility.

The video also overlaid audio of Trump, making it appear as though he called illegal immigrants “animals.” That claim has been fact-checked several times and deemed false. Trump was referring to MS-13 gang members as animals, not all illegal immigrants.
Juarez noted that her father had voted for Trump during the 2016 election because, as a Marine, he believed military families would be protected from deportations. Juarez’s mother was deported in 2018 and has remained in Mexico since the deportation.
