Russian airlines are now authorized to seize foreign planes to use for domestic purposes after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed it into law.
The new law will allow Russian airlines to keep and continue operating aircraft leased from foreign entities despite canceled contracts due to sanctions, according to a report that cited state news agency TASS.
This comes as the international community has placed crippling sanctions on Russia after it invaded neighboring country Ukraine.

Despite the new ability to keep foreign aircraft, it reportedly won’t have a lasting effect, as planes of their caliber require consistent maintenance and updates that will not be received as a result of the sanctions.
Russia recently placed retaliatory sanctions on multiple U.S. figures, including President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, White House press secretary Jen Psaki, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Hunter Biden. The “stop list” reportedly featured 13 figures.
