Former Mexican President Vicente Fox says he “doesn’t mind” if the U.S. builds a physical wall along the U.S.-Mexico border but reiterated his fierce opposition to the suggestion that the U.S. bill Mexico for its construction.
“No, I don’t mind. If you’re going to build a wall and spend $30 billion, do it,” Fox told SiriusXM radio host Pete Dominick. “We mind about paying for the wall. We mind about the United States isolating itself in four walls. You’re losing world leadership.”
Fox, who has been an outspoken critic of President Trump and his proposed border wall, said that it’s offensive that Trump has said Mexico will pay for the wall.
“He said we’re going to charge you in remittances. He cannot do that. That’s absolutely illegal. That’s a crime. He cannot take away the money that these hard-working people earn here,” Fox said while also suggesting that a southern border wall will only keep Mexicans inside the U.S. and those outside seeking entry will find a way to get passed it.
Since the campaign trail, President Trump has repeatedly pledged to get Mexico to fund the wall’s construction. Mexico has repeatedly asserted it will not pay for the wall.
