Tom Steyer, the California hedge fund manager behind a campaign to impeach President Trump, is headed to Iowa.
Steyer, 61, will visit the first-in-the-nation caucus state next Wednesday, Jan. 9, to talk with teachers and students about “the right to learn,” one of his so-called “Five Rights.” His platform also includes the right to an equal vote, the right to clean air and clean water, the right to a living wage, and the right to health.
Steyer will additionally speak with representatives of the Iowa Latino and Asia Coalition and host a town hall during the trip, according to a press release issued by his NextGen organization, a liberal advocacy group.
Steyer, who first unveiled his “Five Rights” strategy in November, has already visited Charleston, S.C. — a city in another early voting state — to discuss his plan.
“I am willing to do anything,” Steyer told Charleston’s Post and Courier last month, before adding he was yet to make an official announcement about a 2020 bid for the White House. “This is not about me. This is not about my personal ambition. I am extremely ambitious to be part of the group of people to get this country back on a decent path: prosperous, equitable and safe.”
This will not be Steyer’s first trip to Iowa. He paid the Hawkeye State three visits in 2018, according to the Iowa Starting Line website.
Steyer is a vocal critic of Trump, most visibly through his efforts lobbying for the president’s impeachment. He also invested $120 million to boost Democrats ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
