White House congratulates Moon Jae-in for victory in South Korean presidential election

The White House congratulated Moon Jae-in for his victory in the South Korean presidential election on Tuesday and said President Trump looks forward to working with him.

“We congratulate President-elect Moon Jae-in and join the people of South Korea in celebrating their peaceful, democratic transition of power,” press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement.

“We look forward to working with President-elect Moon to continue to strengthen the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea and to deepen the enduring friendship and partnership between our two countries.”

Moon served as the opposition leader in South Korea since 2015 and won the presidency after the previous president was brought down by a corruption scandal. He’s 64 years old.

Moon won the election by a decisive margin in Tuesday’s vote.
