Elijah Cummings hospitalized for bacterial infection

Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings is in the hospital for a bacterial infection in his knee, his office said Friday.

The congressman, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland and underwent a minor procedure Friday. His office said doctors drained the bacterial infection, and Cummings is expected to fully recover.

Cummings, 66, had heart issues that kept him away from Capitol Hill for several months last year. He had a “minimally invasive” heart procedure in May, but developed an infection after the operation that sidelined him until September.

Cummings’ office announced his hospitalization Friday after his wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, told supporters she would be suspending her bid for governor of Maryland.

“Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena,” Rockeymoore Cummings said in an email, according to Politico. “Unfortunately, due to personal considerations, I am suspending my bid for governor of Maryland.”

Sources told the outlet her announcement was tied to Cummings’ health problems.
