New California governor’s wife wants to be ‘first partner’

Governor-elect Gavin Newsom’s wife has gone through several titles as a political significant other: first, “first girlfriend,” as she started dating the then-mayor of San Francisco. Now, Jennifer Siebel Newsom wants to be known as “first partner.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Siebel Newsom, 44, prefers the term over “first lady,” feeling it is a more inclusive term.

Siebel Newsom said while she is not her husband’s political equal, the two “complement and support each other, and I’m obviously a thought partner of his — and the main thought partner.”

She says her role is more focused on culture than policy. “The work I do really parallels and complements Gavin’s work,” she said, “because it’s about awakening people’s consciousness, shifting hearts and minds, attitudes and behaviors.”

Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker, started dating Newsom, 51, in 2006, after his divorce from Kimberly Guilfoyle was final. The two married in 2008, while he was mayor. Newsom was elected lieutenant governor in 2010. The two have four children.

Guilfoyle, 49, is now dating Donald Trump Jr., the son of President Trump.
