President Trump will meet the president of Ukraine on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week amid a swirl of controversy about a whistleblower complaint apparently related to a telephone call between the two leaders.
A senior administration official said Trump will meet Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday.
He declined to discuss the agenda other than to say Trump was expected to congratulate Zelensky on his election win this year.
Trump’s communications with a foreign leader, in which he made a “promise,” prompted an American intelligence officer to make a complaint in August to the inspector general for intelligence agencies.
It was later reported that the discussions were related to Ukraine.
