Pelosi condemns Islamophobia after mass shooting in New Zealand

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday condemned Islamophobia following the murder of 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

“We mourn the loss of 49 lives cut short in the horrific act of violence in Christchurch, New Zealand,” Pelosi, D-Calif., wrote on Twitter. “Islamophobia and such acts of pure hatred have no place in a civilized world.”

The shooter said in a 74-page manifesto that he carried out the attack “to take revenge on the invaders for the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by foreign invaders in European lands throughout history.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., issued a similar statement on Twitter that condemned violence against Muslims.

“The Christchurch terrorist attack by a white supremacist against Muslims in their house of worship is sickening and inhuman,” he tweeted. “We pray for the victims. We stand with the survivors and the families impacted by this violence. We will do all we can to help the people of New Zealand.”
