A rare blue lobster was the catch of the day for a pair of fishermen who caught the creature off the coast of Maine.
Luke Rand and his father, Mark, were fishing in the Casco Bay when they caught the bright blue lobster, which Luke said is a healthy-looking male. When the two fishermen showed the blue critter to a dealer, several tourists took photos of it because the creature was “not something that you see every day,” Luke Rand told the Portland Press Herald.
“We’ve never pulled one this color or even seen one to throw back,” said Rand, who has been fishing for 20 years, while his father has fished for 40 years.

The lobster will be kept at Becky’s Diner, owned by Luke Rand’s mother, where it will entertain diners at the restaurant. Becky’s Diner has hosted several famous people as its guests, including singer Taylor Swift, first lady Jill Biden, and former President Bill Clinton, according to the outlet. The restaurant was also featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, a show hosted by Guy Fieri on the Food Network.
Blue lobsters get their color from “a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein,” according to the University of Maine Lobster Institute. The Rands’ find of the blue lobster was “one in 2 million,” the institute said.
