Va. officials extending funding for local mental health institute

Virginia officials reached a tentative deal Friday to cobble together one-time carryover funds that would preserve 13 beds at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute through the end of 2011.

They also hope to work out a partnership with Inova Fairfax to set up crisis services for patients who regular hospitals don’t accept.

Last year, officials were able to preserve 13 of 19 acute-admission beds at the center that were slated for cuts, the Washington Post reported, but the institute had been in danger of losing those beds at the end of the current fiscal year on June 30.
