House to subpoena White House for Ukraine call records

The House is drafting a subpoena compelling the White House to turn over material related to President Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Democrats announced.

Their statement Wednesday marks the first major White House inquiry from the House since Democrats announced a formal impeachment inquiry last month.

“Over the past several weeks, the Committees tried several times to obtain voluntary compliance with our requests for documents, but the White House has refused to engage with—or even respond to—the Committees,” the memo from three Democratic House committee head states.

Democrats say they are probing whether Trump undermined national security by dangling security assistance in exchange for help investigating his chief political rival, Joe Biden. Democrats accuse the White House of attempting to cover up the call.

Democrats said they plan to send the subpoena on Oct. 4.

Trump has denied acting improperly on the call and said he wants to get to the bottom of 2016 election meddling and efforts by Democrats to dig up dirt about him by soliciting help from Ukraine.

The memo is signed by Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings, and Foreign Affairs Chairman Eliot Engel.
