Chip Foose, Carroll Shelby, or Jack Roush are probably not names you’ll find at the top of a Hollywood celebrity A-list. But for car enthusiasts like Trevor Boone, modeling himself after these automotive trendsetters is every bit as important.
Boone is a 23-year-old dent removal technician from Carroll County with dreams of seeing his own name emblazoned next to the greats. In 2003, Boone was fresh out of high school and already pressing into the hobby with a 1999 Chrysler 300M, a passion he credits to his grandfather who was a car salesman.
“He would always take me to work with him and I’d roam around the showroom floor looking at the cars,” said Boone. “I did this until the day he passed away.”
Around this time, Boone began working at 410 Motorsports in Westminster and got hooked up with local car enthusiasts and fabricators Ryan Shutt and Glen McKinney, who propelled Boone deeper into the hobby. He continued modifying his 300M up until last summer when he had to retire it because of what he termed “too many problems.” After four years of melding his own identity with his car, it was time to transition into something entirely new.
A friend was in the process of unloading an import and Boone was in the market. After some talk, he handed over the keys to a tricked-out 2001 Honda Accord. The car was also the handiwork of Shutt and McKinney, as well as locals Joe Malinowski and Ben Parks. With the right people behind this project vehicle, the Accord has attracted sponsors such as Polk Audio, Speedesign, Dunlop Tires, The Glosser and Kyowa Wheels. Boone even has Body Shop Tattoos imprinting their name on both his body and the car.
This sour green whip has even made its rounds under the big lights of Hollywood, making a cameo in the movie “Step Up 2” and finding its way onto the set of an upcoming movie, called “Bumper.”
Boone enjoys all the attention. But don’t mistake his Accord for a muscle car.
“I get people asking me if it’s a Mustang all the time when it clearly says Honda on the back and motor,” Boone said.
While Boone inherited a beautiful show car, he didn’t just change the oil at 3,000 miles. Some modifications he made along the way include revamping the trunk, increasing the headlight output with 30K HIDs and adding 4-point harnesses for the seats. Next year’s plans include custom airbrush graphics courtesy of Body Shop Tattoo. This Accord is proof of an innovative build and design backed by a family affair of customizers.
What do you drive? My current show car is a 2001 Honda Accord.
And why do you drive it? I drive it because the recognition and attention I get in parking lots and red lights and just driving down the road when people are staring and taking pictures are way better than any trophy I could ever win at a car show.
What makes this car so special? It has opened up a lot of doors for me. It has also opened up doors for sponsors.
What was your most memorable driving experience? This summer when I drove it to Ocean City for the first time … such a great drive, perfect weather … just me and the road. I couldn’t have asked for more.
And your first ticket? What was it for? My first ticket in this car was actually for something stupid. I didn’t have a tag light yet. The officer didn’t write me for anything else that was illegal on the car, so I got off pretty easy.
What was the first car you owned? My first car, a 1999 Chrysler 300M, ended up being the first show car. I got it in my junior year of high school and the ideas and customizing went from there.
What’s currently in your CD player? Janet Jackson and the best of Michael Jackson 1 & 2. They’re on heavy rotation in the car. People trip when they here Michael jamming out the car or when I’m just cruising down the street. I’ve had people start dancing at gas stations when I pull up.
