Man in wheelchair killed by car

A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck in a hit-and-run crash in Southeast Washington early Saturday, D.C. police said.

Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman, said the crash happened at about 3:50 a.m. on the 5000 block of Benning Road SE. Carew said the driver fled the scene after hitting the man, whose wheelchair was found nearby.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police had no identifying information about the victim.

Police are looking for a light gray or silver four-door Honda or Lexus with a sun roof, Carew said. The car likely sustained heavy front-end damage and the headlight on the driver’s side may be missing.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 202-727-9099. Anyone who spots the vehicle while driving should call 911.
