Former Maine Gov. Paul LePage said Jewish donors to the Democratic Party should be infuriated over Rep. Ilhan Omar’s rhetoric about Israel and Jewish Americans.
“The Jewish people in America have been great supporters of the Democratic Party,” the Republican told Portland radio station WGAN-AM on Monday. “In fact, that’s where their money comes from for the most part. They should be absolutely insulted for what she’s been saying.”
Omar, D-Minn., has drawn intense criticism for her comments about Jewish Americans supporting Israel, which she suggested was buying U.S. lawmakers through political donations.
LePage predicted Jewish people would contribute less money to Democrats in the future in response to Omar’s comments, but that they won’t abandon the party.
“I think what they might do, the fundraising might get hurt a little bit,” he said. “But I don’t think they’re going to desert the Democratic Party.”
On Friday, President Trump accused Democrats of being “anti-Jewish” after the House passed a resolution condemning hatred and bigotry rather, which did not single out Omar for her comments.
“I thought yesterday’s vote by the House was disgraceful,” Trump said. “The Democrats have become an anti-Israel party. They’ve become an anti-Jewish party.”
