West Green Street prepares to get $2.2M ?root canal?

West Green Street is ready to undergo reconstruction comparable to “a root canal,” said Westminster Mayor Thomas Freemason.

“The street is in terrible condition and is in desperate need of reconstruction,” he said, referring to deteriorated curbs, gutters and pavement. Of the approximate $2.2 million project, a loan from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development will cover roughly 82 percent of the costs, with the remainder coming out of the city?s water and sewer funds.

Westminster decided on a full-scale reconstruction on the road, which has no stormwater drainage, several years ago, said Thomas B. Beard, city director of planning andpublic works.

In addition to budgeting and community consultation, design for the project took a year, said Michael Matte, city senior engineer.

Phase 1 includes installing a new storm drain below Anchor and Westmoreland streets. Flaggers will direct traffic, but no roads will be closed.

Residents will need to adjust to limited parking and new traffic patterns during Phase 2.

During this period, workers will install new water mains, resulting in the entire length of West Green Street, from New Windsor Road to Cover Alley, being closed. In addition, Westmoreland Street will become one-way westbound from Cover Lane to Ridge Road and two stop signs will be placed on Union Alley.

Thomas, Bennett and Hunter Inc. of Westminster will handle the work.
