Trump adds 2026 World Cup to ‘our long list of accomplishments’

President Trump cheered the news of soccer’s pre-eminent world event coming to the U.S. in an evening tweet Tuesday, following an Oval Office meeting with the sport’s head.

“Add the 2026 World Cup to our long list of accomplishments!” Trump wrote.

The U.S., Canada, and Mexico will jointly host the 2026 version of the sport’s quadrennial world championship. The U.S. last hosted the event in 1994.

Trump met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Carlos Cordeiro, president of U.S. Soccer, to discuss the tournament. The U.S. is expected to host a majority of the games, including the quarterfinals and finals.

The meeting also made news for a joke Trump lobbed at the media, taking one of the souvenirs brought by Infantino, a red card used by soccer referees to eject players from the game, and showing it to the media. Trump had earlier today taken aim at what he called biased search results that do not surface right-wing media.
