Jefferson Davis Highway becomes Richmond Highway — on Google

Although Arlington, Va., officials are still considering a push to rename a section of Jefferson Davis Highway in the county, Google Maps already shows a different name.

The virtual map shows a section of Route 1 that runs through Arlington County as Richmond Highway as of Jan. 11, according to ARL Now.

Officials in neighboring Alexandria, Va., chose to strip the Confederate president’s name from the highway in that area last year, and now Arlington leaders want to do the same.

Google Maps made the change, but those who use Apple Maps will still see Jefferson Davis Highway on the map.

Virginia state Attorney General Mark Herring’s office clarified in a statement that cities like Alexandria have the authority to change state road names within their boundaries, but counties like Arlington do not.

Arlington County officials want state lawmakers to pass a bill that will give the county the ability to change the name of roads on its own.
