Ham, duck on the line in VCU-Butler game

There’s more than just a trip to the national title game on the line in Saturday’s unlikely semifinal match-up between No. 11-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University and No. 8 Butler in the Final Four.

Gov. Bob McDonnell is letting it ride on the VCU Rams, wagering a Virginia country ham against Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ “variety of duck products” on the game.

While McDonnell said he loves “the Butler story,” he’ll be pulling for the Rams on Saturday.

“Coach (Shaka) Smart and his VCU Rams have two more big wins left in them,” said McDonnell.

He said he looks forward to watching the Rams win the national championship, and enjoying some duck upon returning to Richmond.

“In fact, I might save the duck to serve at the Governor’s Mansion when I have the Rams over to celebrate their tremendous season,” McDonnell said.

Gov. Daniels, in kind, said he loves the VCU story, and “if they somehow find a way to get past Butler, I’m for them.”
