Passengers evacuated off Staten Island ferry after fire in engine room

A fire in the engine room of a Staten Island ferry carrying nearly 700 passengers prompted a quick evacuation of the vessel.

Five injuries were reported by officials. The Sandy Ground, named after New York City’s first black community, was put into service earlier this year, a release from the New York City mayor’s office said.

Approximately 868 passengers and 16 crew members were on board at the time of the fire. All of the passengers were ferried to St. George Terminal, according to the Coast Guard

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
