Trump encourages GOP challenger to let Dean Heller run unopposed in Nevada

President Trump on Friday suggested that the Republican Senate candidate in Nevada, Danny Tarkanian, should abandon his campaign against incumbent Republican Sen. Dean Heller and instead pursue a House seat, so he doesn’t divide GOP voters this November.

“It would be great for the Republican Party of Nevada, and it’s unity if good guy Danny Tarkanian would run for Congress and Dean Heller, who is doing a really good job, could run for Senate unopposed!” Trump tweeted Friday afternoon.

Tarkanian, who has unsuccessfully pursued multiple political offices in the state, attacked his opponent in a recent radio interview for working with Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.

“Dean Heller’s saying that he talks to Trump on the phone all the time; talks to Ivanka Trump all the time,” Tarkanian said. “Well, Ivanka Trump was a Democrat, and she’s very, very moderate to liberal, compared to the Republican base.”

Heller has been rated as a severely endangered Republican in this year’s midterm election.

The Nevada GOP primary will take place June 12. The winner will face Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen in November.
