Elizabeth Warren praises ‘forged in fire’ AOC: ‘Millions are taking cues from her’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a 2020 candidate for president, offered fawning praise of fellow liberal firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a profile that appeared in Time’s 2019 list of 100 influential people.

Warren said Ocasio Cortez was “forged in fire” and has millions who are “taking cues from her,” perhaps a nod to the New York Democrat’s large social media presence that extends far beyond her district.

“Her commitment to putting power in the hands of the people is forged in fire. Coming from a family in crisis and graduating from school with a mountain of debt, she fought back against a rigged system,” Warren, D-Mass., said.

“A year ago, she was taking orders across a bar. Today, millions are taking cues from her. She reminds all of us that even while greed and corruption slow our progress, even while armies of lobbyists swarm Washington, in our democracy, true power still rests with the people,” Warren added.

Ocasio-Cortez, thanked Warren for the kind words on Twitter.

“Couldn’t be more honored and humbled to read these words from a woman I admire so deeply,” she said. “Thank you, Senator Warren, for your tireless fight for working families.”

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, and Warren, 69, have found common ground in calling for significantly higher taxes on wealthy Americans and supporting the ideas behind the Green New Deal.

However, in January, Warren distinguished herself from Ocasio-Cortez, stating she is not a socialist and that she favors “capitalism with serious rules.”
