The family of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has stopped its longtime political contributions to Rep. Justin Amash, who became the first Republican in Congress to back impeaching President Trump.
The wealthy family, which hails from Amash’s Michigan district, has not donated to Amash this cycle and has “no plans to do so,” spokesman Nick Wasmiller told the Detroit News.
Members of the family gave Amash a combined $24,300 for his 2018 reelection bid.
The influential donors made the decision before Amash clashed with the president over impeachment, Wasmiller said.

“Family members have expressed increasing concerns about a lack of representation for their district, the Third Congressional, and I would say an inability to advance efforts connected to important policy matters,” he said.
Amash’s comments over the weekend “have not changed the family’s thinking regarding its intent to not provide future support,” Wasmiller said.
The lawmaker said Saturday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report showed Trump “engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment.” He reiterated those comments Monday.
In response, Trump called Amash a “loser” and a “lightweight” for his libertarian views that have often put him at odds with his Republican colleagues.
Trump’s education secretary said she would stop her political contributions when she joined the administration, though other members of her family have continued donating. DeVos also no longer has a role in her family’s company.
