Hillary Clinton carries a 4-point lead over Donald Trump in the latest Fox News poll of likely voters nationwide, despite supporters of the Republican presidential nominee expressing far more enthusiasm about their candidate.
Clinton leads Trump 48 to 44 percent in a two-way matchup against the GOP billionaire, though her edge shrinks to just 2 percentage points (44 to 42 percent) when Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are factored into the race. Support for both third-party candidates remains in the single digits.
Voters who plan to cast their ballot for Trump on Election Day were more likely to describe themselves as “extremely” interested in the current election, than were voters who back Clinton. Similarly, 70 percent of Trump supporters said they “strongly” support the GOP nominee while 57 percent of Clinton’s supporters said the same about their candidate.
Trump continues to best Clinton among white voters (+16 points) and men (+9), while the former secretary of state carries double-digit leads among women (+19), millennials (+16) and non-white voters (+55).
After carrying a 12-point lead among independents in the same poll last week, Trump is now just 4 percentage points ahead of Clinton (39 to 35 percent). Johnson attracts 11 percent support.
The poll of 896 likely voters across the country shows a tight race between Trump and Clinton just two days before they face off for the second presidential debate in St. Louis, Mo. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 3 percentage points.
