With New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio officially announcing his 2020 presidential campaign on Thursday, his own constituents are coming out against the idea.
The Police Benevolent Association, the largest police union in the city, called the attempt to become president “laughable” because of the city’s many unsolved problems.
“It is laughable that a mayor who has shown no interest in running New York City for six years now says he wants to mismanage the entire country,” President Patrick Lynch said in a statement. “While the mayor of our nation’s largest city is busy running around Iowa and getting upstaged by the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, there are real problems here at home.”
“After six years of disrespect for the police officers who keep our city safe, it’s perfectly clear how the mayor treats men and women in uniform. As commander-in-chief, he would be an unmitigated disaster. New York deserves better and the country deserves better,” he said.
With de Blasio’s campaign less than a day old, the union is already busy with protests and signs against the mayor.

De Blasio joining the Democratic primary means he is now the 23rd candidate to attempt to beat President Trump in 2020.
