President Trump took aim at impeachment saying it was disgusting and he was innocent of any high crimes.
“It’s a dirty, filthy, disgusting word,” Trump said Thursday when asked by reporters if he thought Democrats would impeach him. “It’s high crimes and misdemeanor. There was no high crime and there was no misdemeanor. So how do you impeach based on that?”
Trump’s comments on the South Lawn focused on his criticism of Mueller who he called a “true Never Trumper.”
Mueller held a press conference Wednesday in which he said he did not look into charging the president with a crime because he lacked the authority in the first place.
“[T]he Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting president of wrongdoing,” Mueller said referring to Department of Justice standards on indicting a president.
After the press conference, some Democrats seized on the comments as Mueller referring the president to Congress for impeachment hearings.
