Poll: Clinton expands lead over Trump nationally ahead of debate

With only five days until the first presidential debate, Democratic White House hopeful Hillary Clinton holds a 7-point lead in a head-to-head matchup with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

In the new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Clinton leads with 48 percent support to Trump’s 41 percent. In a four-way matchup, Clinton leads by 6 points, taking 43 percent to Trump’s 37 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson pulls 9 percent backing, while Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee, is backed by 3 percent.

While Trump receives more support for those concerned about the economy, 46-41 percent, Clinton polls better on every other issue tested in the poll, including how she would handle being commander in chief, nuclear weapons, immigration, terrorism and homeland security.

Additionally, respondents continue to view President Obama positively. Overall, 51 percent view him positively, while 39 percent view him negatively. However, Trump and Clinton are both under water with their image. Only 28 percent view Trump in a positive light, while 61 view him negatively. As for Clinton, only 37 percent view her positively and 52 percent view her negatively.

The new poll comes as Clinton has seen her lead nearly evaporate in recent weeks. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, Clinton leads by a single point over the real estate mogul and has lost ground in a cadre of battleground states.
