WATCH LIVE: Kevin McCarthy delivers ‘Commitment to America’ speech outlining GOP agenda

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy traveled to Pennsylvania to deliver a speech on his “Commitment to America,” outlining an agenda for the GOP ahead of the midterm elections.

Republicans have been vexed by criticism that the national party has not been forthcoming with specifics on their policy ambitions should they regain control of Congress. McCarthy had reportedly collaborated with a number of Republicans, including former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), who notably championed the “Contract with America” in 1994 before Republicans recaptured the House for the first time in nearly 40 years, to develop the platform.

McCarthy’s plan is expected to entail four pillars, including “an economy that is strong,” “a government that’s accountable,” “a future that’s free,” and “a nation that’s safe.” His agenda is not expected to delve into detailed legislative proposals in those areas.

Amid criticisms that the party has lacked a strong agenda, some Republicans have tried to fill in the gap. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), for example, unveiled an 11-point policy agenda in the “Plan to Rescue America” over the summer. However, his plan drew opposition from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and President Joe Biden alike.
