Man accused of raping young student he babysat

A Vermont man is accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl he babysat when he was a teacher at a private school in Prince George’s County.

Montgomery County police said Fernando A. Asturizaga, 44, of Montpelier, Vt., was arrested Wednesday. He is accused of sexually abusing the girl, who police said was one of his students, while babysitting at her Silver Spring home and at a location in Bethesda between 1999 and 2001.

Police said the girl was 10 when the abuse began.

Police would not name the school where Asturizaga taught. The abuse was only recently reported to authorities, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said.

Asturizaga was charged with two counts of second-degree rape, six counts of second-degree sex offense and two counts of child abuse by a lawful guardian. He was being held Thursday on $100,000 bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
