TUSCOLA, Ill. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a central Illinois woman with allegedly attempting to hire someone to kill the wife of a man with whom she’d been having an affair.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1xxEbKz ) reported Tuesday that 34-year-old Michelle L. Smith of Arcola was charged last week with solicitation to commit murder for hire.

Douglas County State’s Attorney Kevin Nolan says the investigation of Smith began last month after a man told authorities that she approached him to ask about hiring a hit man.

Nolan says Smith and her boyfriend had been in a relationship for at least three years and she had given birth to his child.

Smith is in the county jail, where she is being held on $500,000 bond. She is scheduled to return to court Oct. 15.
