Why doesn’t Barack go and make these promises personally?
This is pretty dramatic stuff. Democrats love to rail against the Defense of Marriage Act (signed by that reactionary Bill Clinton), but it would probably have overwhelming support if anyone bothered to poll on it. It simply guarantees that no state will be required to recognize gay marriages sanctioned in other states. It does not prevent a state from recognizing such marriages, nor sanctioning its own. In effect, it requires an action of the state legislature to bring same sex marriage to a state, rather than a court. If Barack plans to overturn DOMA, and to recognize gay adoption, why isn’t he more forthcoming about it? Why is Michelle Obama making promises at secluded fundraisers in liberal enclaves, far from the eyes of the mainstream press? The Left is fond of saying that McCain is stealthily and secretly trying to extend President Bush’s policies for 4 more years. That wouldn’t be so laughable if Obama were candid about his own.
