Howard Schultz will be at home as the race for the White House heats up.
The former Starbucks CEO, who is considering running for the White House as an independent, said he has had three back surgeries in two months and has “decided to take the summer” to recuperate.
“I take this detour from the road reluctantly,” he said in a statement. “My concern for our country’s future remains, as does my belief that the American people deserve so much more from our elected officials. Civility. Honesty. Real problem solving. My belief in these ideals will never waver.”
“I look forward to being back in touch after Labor Day,” he said.
Schultz has accused the Democratic Party of threatening democracy by moving too far to the left. Democrats have hammered him, saying his potential candidacy could spoil their chances at defeating President Trump in 2020.
In his Wednesday statement, Schultz said he has been to 15 states to speak with voters since he announced he was considering a presidential bid.
