FLORIDA SERVICE FOR SLAIN JOURNALIST SOTLOFF

Letters slain journalist Steven Sotloff wrote to his family before he was beheaded by Islamic State militants were read at his memorial service Friday, with him telling them to be happy and stay positive and that if they didn’t meet again, he hoped they would in heaven. In a service punctuated by tears, Sotloff’s parents, sister and friends spoke of his gentle demeanor and unwavering commitment as a journalist toward putting a face on suffering in the Arab world, despite the personal risks.

DEVELOPER, WIFE WERE ON BOARD OUT-OF-CONTROL PLANE

A prominent real estate developer and his wife were aboard the plane that strayed out of control and crashed off the coast of Jamaica. Rick Glazer said Friday that his parents, Larry and Jane Glazer, were both licensed pilots, but he says he couldn’t confirm they were killed. Larry Glazer owned the high performance single-engine turboprop Socata TBM700 he was flying from Rochester to Florida when contact was lost with the plane after 10 a.m.

YOUNG BOY FOUND, MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING DEATHS OF 4 IN PASCO COUNTY

SWAT teams swarmed a downtown Tampa hotel early Friday, arresting a suspect in the killing of four people whose bodies were found piled on top of each other outside and being circled by birds. A 4-year-old autistic boy believed to be the man’s son was found safe at the hotel, Tampa police said. Police said they took Adam Matos, 28, into custody at the Floridian Palace Hotel, with charges pending. The child, Ismael Tristan Santisteban, was with him. Matos had been the subject of an intense manhunt since the bodies were discovered Thursday.

FLORIDA SUPREME COURT SENDS BACK GAY DIVORCE CASE

The Florida Supreme Court won’t consider the constitutionality of the state’s gay marriage ban in order to settle a same-sex divorce case. The high court said Friday the 2nd District Court of Appeal first should rule on the case, in which a lesbian couple married in Massachusetts and is now seeking a divorce in Florida. A lower court judge ruled that the couple couldn’t get divorced in Florida because the state’s constitution doesn’t recognize gay marriage

BOY, 10, SHOT WHILE RIDING BIKE IN SANFORD

A 10-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle was hit by a stray bullet in Sanford. Police say a man who was arguing with another man on Thursday night pulled out a gun and started shooting. Bullets struck the other man in the buttocks and the child was hit in the abdomen. Sanford police spokesman Shannon Cordingly says the boy lost a lot of blood and was airlifted to Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando.
