UPDATE: Second CSX train derails, tying up VRE

Update, 4:20 p.m.: VRE spokesman Mark Roeber said VRE passengers headed south to the final four stops on the Fredericksburg line will need to board buses at Franconia-Springfield. All southbound trains will stop at Rippon due to the derailment. It’s not clear when regular service will resume, Roeber said, or whether Friday morning’s commute will be affected.

A second CSX train derailed Thursday, this time tying up passenger service on the Virginia Railway Express.

One CSX freight train derailed Thursday morning in a tunnel under downtown Baltimore, according to the Associated Press.

Then a CSX coal train derailed near Quantico, closing both sets of tracks, according to VRE.

VRE commuters on the Fredericksburg Line will likely need to take trains to Rippon, then board buses to Franconia/Springfield, according to VRE. The commuter train service is still looking at alternatives but has encouraged riders to take home other means if possible.
